Lou Lim Iok Garden: Macau’s Idyllic Beauty

The attractive Suzhou style Lou Lim Iok Garden is an elegant haven of lush green tranquility. Situated in the junction of Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida Avenue and Old Rolly Avenue, the public park is rated among the top ten scenic sights of Macau in recognition of its bewitching beauty. The landscaping of Lou Lim Iok Garden which spans over approximately 1.78 hectares was originally a renowned private garden belonging to an affluent trading family who commenced its landscaping in 1904. However, unfortunate financial circumstances forced the sale of the property which was subsequently acquired by the Macau government. The garden was restored to its former glory and opened as a public park in 1974 enabling both locals and tourists to enjoy its remarkable natural beauty and unobtrusive landscaping.

Lou Lim Iok Garden provides an excellent retreat amidst a serene and picturesque environment adorned by ponds, waterfalls and pavilions. The ancient arch that marks the entrance of the gardens leads to many quaint pathways brightened by clusters of flowers and shaded by bamboo. The central point of the park is the Qingcao Hall which is a tour de force of fusion architecture with its harmonious blend of Western and Chinese styles of architecture. At present it is often used as avenue for exhibitions and cultural activities reflecting the important role played by Lou Lim Iok Garden in Macau's daily life. The sparkling pool that faces the Hall is home to fish and turtles whose merry antics can be seen through the clear waters. A waterfall cascades into the pond from the surrounding rocks creating a truly mesmerizing sight. Visitors can enjoy a panoramic display of the park's splendor from the observation point located atop the rocky hill.
